An extended feed and slotted patch create a compact multiband design on an FR4 substrate. Figure 1 from the published IETE Journal of Research article. Select the figure to enlarge it.

Overview

How much multiband behavior can fit into a small printed antenna? This earlier work combines feed and patch modifications to target Wi-Fi, WiMAX, and an X-band frequency range.

How it works

  • Use a 15 x 20 x 1.6 mm FR4 structure.
  • Combine an extended microstrip feed with an I-shaped patch containing a rectangular slot.
  • Add a partial ground plane with symmetric parasitic elements and evaluate the geometric design through simulation and measurement.

A reported result

Simulated impedance bands of 2.34-2.46 GHz, 4.61-5.92 GHz, and 9-9.9 GHz, under the S11 < -10 dB criterion, as reported in the abstract.

The paper also compares simulated and measured return loss in Figure 2. The ranges quoted here are the simulation values, not a replacement for the measured curve.

Scope

Compactness comes with a trade-off: the paper reports low gain in the lowest-frequency band. Impedance matching alone does not establish uniform radiation performance or certify a complete wireless product.
